Rufus Close

A project in Lewes to renovate and redesign the living space of a 1980’s terrace, creating a modern family home. The attic has been converted in to a master bedroom with ensuite bathroom. The exterior of the property has also been improved and, outside, the paved area to the rear now exploits views over Malling Down.

 Greenwich office

An interior design of an office in Greenwich, London. An office has to do several things at once. It needs to be a calling card – visitors will be using it to judge the firm’s work. And it should be a good place for talking to clients. Last, but very far from least, it needs to be a comfortable place for collaborative and inspired work.
To come up with imaginative options for the best use of the space, we decided to hold an internal competition for the office interior design and split into three teams.
To fill these distinctive office spaces, we had the furniture custom-made, including the expansive meeting room table. The

bathrooms gave us another chance to demonstrate our flair for interior design. The whole office design is a great introduction to potential clients of the attention to detail we will bring to their projects. But, just as importantly, it’s proved to be a terrific place for productive work, where it’s possible to both share ideas with our colleagues when we want to and focus on individual tasks when that’s the priority.

The previous aesthetics of this mews house, situated in a charming part of Belgravia, did no justice to the beauty of its location. Despite its comfortable square footage, the layout seemed cramped and didn’t make best use of the ample windows. The bland and dated palette of cream and beige made it seem tired and charmless. The spacious burgundy room on the lower ground floor seemed to have no particular function bar storage, and on the ground floor, the kitchen and dining area and living area were separated, making them both feel unnecessarily small for the dimensions of the house.

On the two upper floors, some of the bedrooms were well-proportioned, but there was one particularly small room that made no sense to retain. Likewise, the bathrooms were rather oversized in comparison due to their location being dictated by the

central stairwell. An angled skylight leading to a terrace was positioned about the bedrooms but the awkward placement of the stairwell made it difficult to access.

Our client had built the shell of a new house in London. It was a basic structure, without any clear sense of what was going to go where inside, and how the rooms would look. How the space would work would need to be expertly designed, as well as deciding where plumbing needed to go, plus choosing the lighting and finishing materials as well as wall coverings and furniture and much more.

A lot of people struggle to understand the difference between interior design and interior decoration – this was exactly the kind of task that could only be done by a skilled and experienced interior designer.

Lowndes Square

The house was essentially a blank canvas – which is a great opportunity, but also a demanding challenge, especially when we were never going to see this property in person. Our client was confident that Urbanist Architecture was right for the job, and we were confident that we would be able to maintain our high standards working on an interior architecture project.
